Punjabi Translation Services
International Translating Company delivers native Punjabi translation for healthcare, immigration, legal, and diaspora documentation. Punjabi is written in two scripts: Gurmukhi (used in Indian Punjab, left to right) and Shahmukhi (used in Pakistani Punjab, right to left). The same spoken language, two entirely different writing systems. Punjabi is also a tonal language, one of the few Indo-Aryan languages with this feature. ITC assigns native Punjabi linguists matched by script, industry, and document type.
Punjabi Translation for Key Industries
The Punjabi diaspora is one of the largest globally. Major communities in Canada (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary), the UK (London, Birmingham, Leeds), and the US (California’s Central Valley, Yuba City, New York, New Jersey) generate steady demand for healthcare translation, immigration documents, and legal services. Punjab itself, the “Land of Five Rivers,” is one of South Asia’s most agriculturally productive regions.
Healthcare and Public Health
Healthcare systems in the UK, Canada, and parts of the US serve large Punjabi-speaking populations. Patient education materials, informed consent forms, prescription instructions, discharge summaries, and public health communications require precise Punjabi translation. A mistranslated dosage instruction in a patient discharge document carries direct patient safety consequences.
Immigration and Diaspora Documents
The Punjabi diaspora spans Canada, the UK, the US, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and the UAE. Birth certificates, marriage certificates, and civil registry documents from Indian or Pakistani Punjab require certified English translation for USCIS filings, Canadian immigration, UK Visas and Immigration, and Australian immigration proceedings. Academic transcripts and professional credentials from Punjabi educational institutions require translation for credential evaluation.
ITC delivers every immigration translation with a signed, notarized certificate of accuracy. This is what makes an ITC translation accepted by USCIS and immigration courts.
Legal and Court Services
Court interpretation and document translation for family law, immigration proceedings, and civil litigation involving Punjabi-speaking parties require native linguists who understand both legal terminology and the appropriate register. Police reports, witness statements, and property dispute documents from Punjab’s courts require certified translation for use in US, UK, Canadian, and Australian legal proceedings.
Agriculture and Agribusiness
Punjab (both Indian and Pakistani) is one of the most agriculturally productive regions in South Asia. Agricultural equipment manuals, trade documentation, quality inspection reports, and export/import paperwork require Punjabi translation. The region is known for wheat, rice (basmati), cotton, and sugarcane production.
Punjabi Language Expertise
Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ / پنجابی) is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by approximately 150 million people worldwide, making it the 10th most spoken language globally. It is the official language of the Indian state of Punjab and is widely spoken in the Pakistani province of Punjab. Punjabi has a rich literary tradition centered on Sikh religious texts, Sufi poetry, and modern literature.
Two Scripts: Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi
Punjabi is written in two different scripts depending on region. In Indian Punjab, Punjabi is written in Gurmukhi script, which reads left to right and was standardized by the second Sikh Guru, Guru Angad, in the 16th century for recording Sikh scriptures. In Pakistani Punjab, Punjabi is written in Shahmukhi script, a modified Arabic script that reads right to left.
The spoken language is the same, but the scripts are entirely different writing systems. A client who needs documents for Indian Punjab requires Gurmukhi. A client who needs documents for Pakistani Punjab requires Shahmukhi. ITC confirms the required script before assigning a linguist.
Gurmukhi has 35 original consonants plus 6 additional consonants. It is an abugida where each consonant carries an inherent vowel. Vowel signs modify the inherent vowel. The Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious text of Sikhism, is written in Gurmukhi script.
A Tonal Language
Punjabi is one of the few Indo-Aryan languages with a tonal system. It has three tones (level, high-rising, low-falling) that are not marked explicitly in Gurmukhi script but are encoded through specific consonant letters. The letters ਘ, ਝ, ਢ, ਥ, ਛ, ਭ serve double duty as both consonants and tone markers. A translator who does not understand the tonal system will produce text that reads unnaturally to native speakers.
Not Hindi, Not Urdu
Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu are all Indo-Aryan languages, but they are mutually distinct. Punjabi has its own grammar, vocabulary, phonology (including tone), and literary tradition. A Hindi translator will produce recognizable but non-native Punjabi. An Urdu translator will not produce correct Punjabi either. ITC assigns native Punjabi linguists who write in the correct script for the target audience.
Certified Punjabi Translation
Every Punjabi translation ITC delivers starts with a native-speaking linguist assigned by industry and document type. Our linguists hold the highest certification available in their country and language. ITC also certifies its own translators to internal standards on a more frequent cycle than external bodies require.
Every project runs through a multi-step process: translation by a native linguist, independent proofreading and editing by a separate linguist, and a quality assurance review that checks for non-linguistic errors.
For US-side legal, immigration, and court work, ITC issues a signed, notarized certificate of accuracy attesting that the translation is faithful to the source, complete, and performed by a translator competent to do the work.

- Translation. The linguist translates following industry terminology and client glossaries.

Gurmukhi is the script used for Punjabi in Indian Punjab. It reads left to right and was developed for Sikh scriptures. Shahmukhi is the script used for Punjabi in Pakistani Punjab. Is Punjabi the same as Hindi or Urdu?
No. Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu are all Indo-Aryan languages, but they are distinct. Punjabi has its own grammar, vocabulary, phonology (including tone), and literary tradition. A Hindi or Urdu translator will produce non-native Punjabi. ITC assigns native Punjabi linguists.
Is Punjabi a tonal language?

Do you handle Punjabi-to-English and English-to-Punjabi?
