Ukrainian Translation Services
Ukrainian to English Translation
Since February 2022, the largest displacement crisis in Europe since World War II has placed Ukrainian translation demand at an unprecedented scale. More than six million Ukrainian refugees are spread across Poland, Germany, Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Each family carries documents: birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, academic transcripts, medical records, asylum claims, property deeds. Each document needs precise, certified translation.
ITC fields native Ukrainian linguists who translate these documents into English with the care that immigration filings, medical records, and legal proceedings require. Our translators read Ukrainian Cyrillic as their first script. They write English at a native, professional register. Every translation passes through a second native Ukrainian linguist for proofreading, then a QA review, then a project manager who checks the final deliverable against your requirements.
For Ukrainian to English translation, the most common document categories we handle include:
- Immigration and civil documents: birth certificates, marriage certificates, police records, passport pages, naturalization papers for USCIS, IRCC, and EU asylum systems
- Academic credentials: transcripts and diplomas from Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Kharkiv National University, and institutions across Ukraine
- Medical records: vaccination histories, surgical reports, prescriptions, discharge summaries, and refugee health documentation
- Legal documents: powers of attorney, court rulings, property deeds, corporate registrations, contracts
- Asylum claims and humanitarian documentation: personal statements, witness accounts, war-crimes documentation, resettlement paperwork
English to Ukrainian Translation
Ukraine is the largest country entirely within Europe, and before the full-scale invasion of 2022, its IT outsourcing sector generated more than $5 billion in annual revenue with over 300,000 professionals building software for clients worldwide. Companies localizing software, technical documentation, API references, and marketing materials for Ukrainian-speaking users need translators who understand both the technology and the language.
ITC translates English-language content into standard literary Ukrainian, the official register used in government, education, media, and commerce. Our native Ukrainian linguists handle software UI localization, technical manuals, training materials, and corporate communications. We work with your development teams to maintain terminology consistency across updates and releases.
For humanitarian organizations, government agencies, and NATO partners operating in Ukraine and neighboring countries, we translate operational documents, public-facing communications, aid distribution materials, and reconstruction planning documents into Ukrainian. Accuracy in this context is an operational necessity.
Ukrainian Is Not Russian
This needs to be said plainly: Ukrainian and Russian are separate languages, not dialects of the same tongue. Both belong to the East Slavic family, but they have different phonological systems, different vocabularies, and different literary traditions. Ukrainian shares more lexical overlap with Polish, Slovak, and Belarusian than with Russian, a result of centuries of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth influence on Ukrainian lands. Assigning a Russian translator to Ukrainian work is not a shortcut. It is a linguistic error and, since 2022, a political one.
Ukrainian buyers, institutions, and government agencies increasingly insist on Ukrainian-language communication and reject Russian-language substitution. ITC fields native Ukrainian linguists who write in standard literary Ukrainian, not Russian speakers who assume proximity is enough.
Several structural differences make Russian-to-Ukrainian substitution unreliable:
- The Ukrainian alphabet has letters Russian does not. Ukrainian uses 33 Cyrillic letters, including і, ї, є, and ґ (ge with upturn). Russian lacks these. Showcase labels in Ukrainian: Україна (Ukraine), Київ (Kyiv), and the language name українська мова. Font rendering and UTF-8 encoding for these letters matter in any digital deliverable.
- Seven-case declension with a productive vocative. Ukrainian nouns decline through seven cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental, locative, and vocative. The vocative case, used for direct address, is alive and productive in Ukrainian. Russian lost its productive vocative centuries ago. A translator trained only in Russian will not handle Ukrainian case agreement at a native level.
- Verb aspect system. Ukrainian verbs mark perfective versus imperfective aspect through prefixes and suffixes that encode direction, completion, and repetition. Non-native translators routinely confuse these aspect pairs, producing text that reads unnaturally to a Ukrainian speaker.
- Surzhyk register. Surzhyk is a mixed Ukrainian-Russian sociolect spoken widely in central and eastern Ukraine, blending Ukrainian grammar with Russian vocabulary. Standard literary Ukrainian is the official standard for government, education, media, and all formal communication. Our translators know the difference and write in the register your audience expects.
Industries We Serve in Ukrainian
Government, Military, and Humanitarian
Since 2022, Ukrainian has become a critical-need language for US government national security purposes, NATO cooperation, and international humanitarian response. We translate for government agencies, military partners, and NGOs handling Ukrainian-language documents for security cooperation, refugee processing, humanitarian aid distribution, and reconstruction planning. Our work in this sector operates under NDA and follows strict security protocols.
IT and Technology
Ukraine is one of Europe’s largest IT outsourcing hubs. Companies like Genesis, SoftServe, Eleks, and N-iX build software for global clients, and that software needs localization. We translate software UI strings, API documentation, technical specifications, developer guides, and marketing materials between English and Ukrainian. Our linguists work with your engineering teams to maintain glossaries and terminology databases across product cycles.
Diaspora and Immigration
The Ukrainian-American community numbers more than one million, concentrated in New York City (especially Brighton Beach, historically called “Little Odessa”), Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Sacramento. The Ukrainian-Canadian community is the largest in the world at approximately 1.4 million, centered in Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, and Saskatoon. Both communities generate steady demand for immigration filings, civil documentation, family legal documents, and business translations. We handle USCIS filings in the United States and IRCC filings in Canada with notarized certificates of accuracy.
Academic and Credential Evaluation
Ukrainian students and professionals seeking evaluation of their credentials in the US, Canada, or Europe need translated transcripts and diplomas. We translate academic records from institutions across Ukraine, including Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, and Kharkiv National University. Our translations meet the requirements of WES, ECE, and other credential evaluation services.
Certified Ukrainian Translation
Ukraine does not have a single government-issued translator certification body equivalent to the American Translators Association. For US-side certified translation, the mechanism is ITC’s notarized certified translation with a certificate of accuracy. This document accompanies your translation and attests that the work is a complete and accurate rendering of the source material.
Our certified Ukrainian translations meet the requirements of:
- USCIS for immigration filings (visas, green cards, naturalization, asylum claims, family petitions)
- IRCC for Canadian immigration
- EU asylum systems for refugee processing
- US and international courts for legal proceedings
- Academic credential evaluation services (WES, ECE, and others)
- State and federal government agencies
Every certified translation follows our multi-step quality process: a native Ukrainian linguist translates, a second native Ukrainian linguist proofreads, QA software compares source and target, and a project manager reviews the final deliverable before the notarized certificate is attached.
Why ITC for Ukrainian Translation
ITC has translated for organizations that cannot afford errors since 1969. We work across 230+ languages with a network of native linguists who write in the standard literary register of their language. For Ukrainian, that means native Ukrainian linguists, not Russian substitutes, writing in standard literary Ukrainian as defined by the current orthographic standard.
Our process is the same whether the project is a single birth certificate or a 500-page technical manual. A native Ukrainian linguist translates. A second native Ukrainian linguist proofreads. QA software checks for omissions and inconsistencies. A project manager reviews the final deliverable against your requirements. The notarized certificate of accuracy is available for any project that needs it.
We do not crowdsource. We do not assign Russian translators to Ukrainian work. We do not treat Ukrainian as a dialect of Russian. Every linguist on a Ukrainian project is a native speaker of Ukrainian who reads and writes Cyrillic as a first script.
Related Languages and Services
Ukrainian sits within the East Slavic branch of the Slavic language family, alongside Russian translation services and Belarusian translation services. Despite their family relationship, these are distinct languages with different standards, vocabularies, and literary traditions. ITC fields separate native linguist teams for each.
Ukrainian also shares significant lexical overlap with West Slavic languages due to centuries of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth influence. If your work involves Polish translation services alongside Ukrainian, we coordinate across both language teams to maintain consistency in shared terminology.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can a Russian translator handle Ukrainian documents?
A: No. Ukrainian and Russian are separate languages with different alphabets (Ukrainian includes letters that Russian lacks), different vocabularies, and different grammatical structures. Ukrainian has seven noun cases including a productive vocative case that Russian lost centuries ago. Since the 2022 invasion, Ukrainian institutions and government agencies reject Russian-language substitution as both linguistically wrong and politically unacceptable. ITC fields native Ukrainian linguists for all Ukrainian projects.
Q: Do you provide certified Ukrainian translation for USCIS immigration filings?
A: Yes. We provide notarized certified Ukrainian translation with a certificate of accuracy that meets USCIS requirements for visas, green cards, asylum claims, naturalization, and family petitions. The same certification meets IRCC requirements for Canadian immigration and EU asylum system requirements.
Q: Can you translate Ukrainian academic credentials for evaluation in the US or Canada?
A: Yes. We translate transcripts, diplomas, and academic records from institutions across Ukraine, including Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukrainian Catholic University, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, and Kharkiv National University. Our translations meet the requirements of WES, ECE, and other credential evaluation services.
Q: How do you handle Ukrainian refugee or asylum documentation?
A: We translate personal statements, civil documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, police records), medical records, and supporting documentation for asylum claims and refugee resettlement. We understand the urgency these cases carry and offer expedited service when deadlines require it. All asylum and refugee work is handled with confidentiality and cultural sensitivity.
Q: Can you localize software and technical documentation for Ukrainian IT projects?
A: Yes. Ukraine is one of Europe’s largest IT outsourcing hubs with over 300,000 professionals and a pre-war sector revenue exceeding $5 billion. We translate software UI strings, API documentation, technical specifications, developer guides, and marketing materials. Our linguists work with your engineering teams to maintain terminology glossaries and ensure consistency across releases.
Q: What is Surzhyk, and does it affect translation?
A: Surzhyk is a mixed Ukrainian-Russian sociolect spoken widely in central and eastern Ukraine. It blends Ukrainian grammar with Russian vocabulary. Standard literary Ukrainian is the official standard used in government, education, media, and formal communication. Our translators write in standard literary Ukrainian by default. If your target audience uses a specific register, tell us and we match it.
Q: How do you handle the Ukrainian-specific Cyrillic letters in digital files?
A: Ukrainian uses four Cyrillic letters that Russian does not. These letters require correct Unicode encoding and font rendering. Our deliverables use UTF-8 encoding throughout, and we verify that the Ukrainian-specific characters display correctly in your target format, whether that is a PDF, a web page, a Word document, or a software interface.
Q: What is the difference between Ukrainian translation and Ukrainian interpretation?
A: Translation is written. Interpretation is spoken. ITC provides both services. For Ukrainian translation, we handle documents, software, websites, and other written materials. For Ukrainian interpretation, we provide over-the-phone and video remote interpretation through separate teams of native Ukrainian interpreters. If you need both, we coordinate across teams to ensure consistency.
